Veritau is a Council owned shared service. Its Counter Fraud Team works for six local authorities across North Yorkshire. The creation of SFIS forced fraud teams to evolve, and Veritau has excelled at this. It has transformed itself into a corporate fraud service, undertaking investigations affecting all areas of authority funding.
By identifying areas of high risk - adult social care and council tax in particular - the fraud team has recovered over £1.6 million in the last five years for its councils. The team works closely with other agencies and council departments to ensure all fraud risks are identified and acted upon quickly. Thus, the counter fraud team has also identified risks in low-funding areas, such as crisis funding schemes and parking fraud. These nonetheless impact upon the available funds to provide services for the public.
Understanding the wider picture has helped Veritau excel in investigating corporate fraud.
