I decided to study for the IRRV qualification to improve my learning and consolidate knowledge gained in the workplace.  It certainly did that, and more.

 Studying via distance learning gave me the opportunity to study around my very busy work and home life.  I was a little concerned at first that I wouldn’t be able to get the most out of the course without classroom sessions, but I was wrong.  There is an online group session with your tutor for each module of the subject being studied, as well as pre-exam sessions close to the exams, which are invaluable and I would strongly recommend that anybody studying the subject attends them all.  Tutors are contactable via the portal or email between sessions and usually by phone if needed.  The tutors are experts in their field, all tutors I had the privilege of working with were hugely knowledgeable, went above and beyond to help with any queries and whilst the subjects covered are very technical and correct terms and legislation are needed, they were able to deliver the material in an understandable and useful way.

The learning material may look a little daunting at first, there is a lot of it, but it’s broken down into modules that makes it much easier to digest.  There are also webinars for each subject recorded by your tutor, I found it very useful to watch them before starting the reading for each subject.

 Since studying the course, I have found that I have a far greater understanding of the Acts and Regulations that underpin the everyday work of a billing authority.  I have greater knowledge of the wider Revenues area and have been able to help colleagues and respond to queries and complaints with more ease and confidence.  I felt a great sense of achievement after getting good results in the 3 exams and assignment, knowing that I studied hard and achieved my goal.  Being a member of the IRRV opens the door to a wealth of information and access to expert opinions for technical queries.

I would absolutely recommend that anybody working in Local Government or in associated fields studies for an IRRV qualification.  You will surprise yourself with what you know and what you can learn.  

 After completing the qualification, I feel better equipped to continue and progress within my career.
