The Work and Pensions Committee hold a one-off evidence session examining housing benefit policy, including the effectiveness of Local Housing Allowance (LHA) in supporting renters and wider issues around housing supply, rent arrears and homelessness.
Wednesday 9 June, virtual meeting
At 10am
Ahead of the session, a letter to the Secretary of State for Housing from the Work & Pensions and HCLG Committees has today been published.
The correspondence asks several questions about rent arrears and the end of the ban on evictions from private rented properties, which was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic and expired at the start of this month.
HCLG Committee Chair Clive Betts is due to take part in the evidence session on Wednesday as a guest and the session is likely to examine the impact of lifting the ban.
The meeting will also be exploring the role of LHA and the housing element of Universal Credit in helping renters meet their housing costs, as well as how it impacts on the supply of private rented accommodation by landlords and the relationship between housing benefits, housing supply and homelessness.
