Details

This guidance and grant determination are for local councils responsible for administering the COVID Local Support Grant in England.

The COVID Local Support Grant (CLSG), previously the COVID Winter Grant Scheme (CWGS), is a temporary scheme set up by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It funds county councils and unitary authorities (including metropolitan councils and London boroughs) to provide direct assistance to support families with children, other vulnerable households and individuals most in need.

The grant enables local authorities across England to support those who are struggling with the cost of food, energy and water bills and other associated costs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID Local Support Grant 17 April to 20 June 2021

On 14 April 2021 the government announced an extension of £40 million of extra financial support for those in need affected by the pandemic, covering the period from 17 April 2021 until 20 June 2021.

This is now called the COVID Local Support Grant and is in addition to the COVID Winter Grant Schemes totalling £229.1 million.

COVID Local Support Grant extension 21 June to 30 September 2021

On 21 June 2021, the COVID Local Support Grant was extended for a final time, by a further £160 million, to cover the period up to 30 September 2021. This temporary support is being extended beyond the planned ending of COVID-19 restrictions to help families as the economy recovers and the vaccine rollout continues.
