The Communities and Local Government Committee holds a pre-appointment hearing with the Government's preferred candidate for the role of Local Government Ombudsman.

The Committee examines the candidate's independence and professional background and asks about how he can improve the transparency and efficiency of the Ombudsman's work and tackle the perception that the service is biased in favour of local authorities.
The Committee will set out its findings on the candidate's suitability for the post in a report ahead of a final decision on whether to proceed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
The Local Government Ombudsman investigates complaints from members of the public about local authority functions and services and provides advice and guidance on good administrative practices and how to improve local service delivery.
Since 2008, departmental select committees have had a formal role in the appointment process of some designated public posts which fall under the remit of their respective Government departments.
