Introduction
The Whole of Government Accounts (WGA) initiative is to produce a set of consolidated financial accounts for the entire UK public sector on commercial accounting principles. The preparation of WGA is a part of the Code for Fiscal Stability and are given statutory backing by the Government Resources and Accounts Act 2000.
The English Local Government element is the largest component of this consolidation including almost 500 local government bodies (as designated by HMT).
WGA will provide better quality and more transparent information to assist in the development of fiscal policy, to facilitate better management of public services and to assist with the more effective distribution of resources.
