Derby City Council (18 010 740)
Summary: Ms X complains about the Council’s recovery of business rates for a property her business occupied. Ms X complains the Council failed to respond to her correspondence, then wrongly proceeded with recovery action at her mother’s home. There was no fault by the Council in the action taken. Huntingdonshire District Council (18 016 435)
Summary: Ms X can make a late appeal to the Valuation Tribunal to resolve a dispute about whether she is liable to pay Council Tax for a property. It is reasonable to expect her to appeal and therefore the Ombudsman has stopped investigating the complaint. Peterborough City Council (19 000 236)
Summary: The Ombudsman cannot investigate Mr X’s complaint about the Council using public money to produce a public video which Mr X considers makes a political statement. This is outside the Ombudsman’s legal remit as it affects all or most of the people in the Council’s area. London Borough of Lambeth (18 011 833)
Summary: Ms X complains on behalf of her father (Mr Y) that the Council unreasonably took enforcement action against him for non-payment of business rates. The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint because there is no evidence of fault by the Council. Newcastle upon Tyne City Council (18 014 782)
Summary: Mr X complains that the Council has failed to assist him with welfare payments. The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint because there is no evidence of fault by the Council. North Lincolnshire Council (18 019 233)
Summary: The Ombudsman cannot investigate this complaint about a housing benefit overpayment because the complainant appealed to the tribunal. Southampton City Council (18 019 491)
Summary: The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint that the Council has charged too much council tax for the past 30 years. This is because there is insufficient evidence of fault by the Council and because the complainant could appeal to the Valuation Tribunal. London Borough of Lambeth (18 019 530)
Summary: The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint about the amount of housing benefit the Council has awarded. This is because the complainant can use her review and appeal rights. London Borough of Newham (18 013 125)
Summary: Miss B complains that the Council has failed to deal with her Housing Benefit claim properly, because it has taken too long to deal with her claims, has lost documents and has not responded to her complaint. The Council took too long to deal with her Housing Benefit claim because it lost or did not process information Miss B provided. Miss B had to wait four months longer than necessary for her claim to be processed. The Council should pay Miss B £100 for the unnecessary delay she suffered. London Borough of Islington (18 013 257)
Summary: Miss Y complains about the Council’s decision to seek recovery of overpaid Council Tax benefit dating back to 2007. Based on the information seen, the Ombudsman is satisfied that Miss Y received notification of the overpayment in early 2016 and had cause to complain about the matter at the time. The complaint made to the Ombudsman is now too late to investigate, and there is no good reason for us to exercise our discretion. Leicester City Council (18 014 091)
Summary: Mr E complains the Council communicated poorly when collecting council tax from him, causing confusion and leading to it adding unnecessary costs to his bill. We do not uphold this complaint finding no or insufficient evidence of fault by the Council in its billing or recovery of council tax from Mr E.
