Digital Mentors

In July 2008 Communities and Local Government launched Communities in Control: Real People, Real Power . This announced an initiative to develop a network of "Digital Mentors" working in deprived communities in England which would help more individuals to use social and community media. Through increasing skills in using websites, podcasts, digital photography, online publishing tools and local broadcast media, Communities and Local Government wish to:

  • empower individuals and communities by giving those citizens who feel 'voiceless' or 'unheard' new tools to express their views and collaborate on issues of relevance to them
  • provide informal and formal learning opportunities and assist people into employment, particularly in the creative industries
  • improve access to public and other services

Together this work will contribute towards a number of Governmental objectives including:

  • The empowerment objectives as set out in this Department's Communities in Control white paper
  • To make the benefits of technology benefit everyone in society - see the cross-government report Delivering Digital Inclusion: An Action Plan for Consultation
  • The informal adult learning objectives of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills - www.adultlearningconsultation.org.uk (external link)
  • The employment in the creative industries objective of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport - www.culture.gov.uk/reference_library/publications/3572.aspx (external link)

Communities and Local Government are seeking bids from individual organisations and consortia which have community engagement and media literacy training experience. See below for further information.
