Communities Secretary John Denham announced that more than £3bn of taxpayers' money is being freed up for front line services as a result of the Government's drive to make local government more efficient.
New figures published today (8 December) show that local authorities expect efficiency savings to reach £3.1bn by March 2010 - equivalent to £172 for the average band D council tax payer. Local Government has a target of £5.5bn in efficiency savings by 2011. Councils can use efficiencies to re-invest in front line services, or hold down council tax.
New regulations were also published that will require efficiency savings for councils, fire authorities and police authorities to be published in council tax bills.
Speaking at departmental questions in the House of Commons (8 December) John Denham said:
"I want to ensure that councils are performing as efficiently as possible and making the best possible use of every pound of council tax. I am pleased to be able to confirm today that councils have forecast efficiency savings of more than £3bn by March 2010, making good progress towards the target of £5.5bn by March 2011. Smarter Government, published yesterday, sets out how Government will support councils in continuing to deliver improved services with improved value for money."
