This guide explains who can currently make a claim for Universal Credit. It gives details of how Universal Credit is being introduced across the country and the rules about who can make a claim.

It also covers what claimants will be expected to do in return for getting Universal Credit. This includes:

  • attending interviews at the Jobcentre
  • accepting a Claimant Commitment
  • registering and looking for work on Universal Jobmatch
  • telling DWP about changes in their circumstances

If you are making a new claim for Universal Credit you may be able get an advance on your Universal Credit payment if you’ve recently been receiving another benefit or you’re in urgent financial need. Check with your work coach.
