Summary

Details of the level of council tax set by local authorities in England for 2010-11 were announced on 24 March 2010. This latest statistical release also contains data from 2001-02 to 2010-11.

The key points from the latest release are:

The average Band D council tax set by local authorities in England for 2010-11 will be £1,439 compared with £1,414 in 2009-10. This equates to an average increase between 2009-10 and 2010-11 of 1.8 per cent, the lowest increase since the introduction of council tax in 1993-94.

In England in 2010-11, the average council tax per dwelling will be £1,195 compared with £1,175 in 2009-10, an increase of 1.7 per cent, again the lowest increase since the introduction of council tax in 1993-94.

The average Band D council tax will be £1,309 in London, £1,399 in metropolitan areas and £1,484 in shire areas.

Parish precepts in 2010-11 will total £357 million. This represents an increase of 4.8 per cent over the 2009-10 figure of £340 million.

The total tax base used for setting council taxes for 2010-11 was 18.2 million Band D equivalent dwellings. This represents an increase of 0.6 per cent over the figure of 18.1 million for 2009-10.
