Today we have published the 2016 national report on the outcomes of the previous NFI exercise together with a news release.
This report sets out how, in the reporting period 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2016, £222m has been found by the organisations that took part in the NFI across the UK (£198m in England). This will be the first report since the NFI became part of Cabinet Office.
Participants have collectively identified £1.39 billion in detected and prevented fraud since the NFI first started in 1996.
We have set out in the report introduction the main categories of fraud identified by the NFI in England, namely:
On page nine of the report we have included a recommendation aimed at all public sector organisations that take part. We are calling on these organisations to consider how they can better use the NFI data matches in future, alongside other fraud detection and prevention tools they may use, to maximise the amount of fraud found.
Also on page nine we set out what the Cabinet Office will do to ensure the NFI continues to meet the needs of those that take part and how we will maintain or increase the benefits of using the NFI products in the fight against fraud.
If you have any comments on the report we would be pleased to receive them by email to nfiqueries@cabinetoffice.gov.uk
