Minister questioned on 100% business rate retention

05 March 2018

The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee questions Minister for Local Government Rishi Sunak MP as part of the 100% business rate retention inquiry.

Councils' financial planning

The inquiry is examining how the extended implementation period for further business rate retention is affecting councils' financial planning.

The change in local government funding was due to be implemented by 2019-20 but, although the Government says it remains committed to its implementation, it has since been delayed. The Government has announced its aim for councils to retain at least 75% of business rates in 2020-21.

The session is likely to focus on what can be learnt from the 100% business rate retention pilots, the mechanism for dealing with appeals now the Local Government Finance Bill has lapsed and the links between business rate retention and the adult social care Green Paper.

Members will also have the opportunity to ask about progress being made on the Fair Funding Review.

The Committee previously took evidence from local council representatives.
