Collection rates for council tax and non-domestic rates in England 2008-09

Summary

The latest statistics on the collection rates for council tax and non-domestic rates in England 2008-09 were released on 25 June 2009.

The latest statistics release includes data from 2004-05 to 2008-09 and updates those statistics previously released on 18 June 2008.

  • Local authorities in England collected £20.9 billion in council taxes by the end of March 2009 out of a total of £21.6 billion collectable. This gave a national average in-year collection rate for council tax in England of 97.0 per cent in 2008-09, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points over 2007-08.
  • Local authorities in England collected £19.1 billion in non-domestic rates by the end of March 2009 out of a total of £19.5 billion collectable. This gave a national average in-year collection rate for non-domestic rates in England of 97.8 per cent in 2008-09, a decrease of 1 percentage point on 2007-08.
  • Over the last four years, the national collection rate for council tax has increased by 0.4 of a percentage point. The national collection rate for national non-domestic rates in 2008-09 was 0.5 of a percentage point lower than four years ago and is now the lowest since 2000-01.
  • All classes of authority reported decreases in their average non-domestic collection rates in 2008-09. The largest decrease was in metropolitan districts where the average collection rate went down by 1.3 percentage points.
