The school improvement monitoring and brokering grant of £50 million per year was announced on 30 November 2016. The grant has been allocated to local authorities since September 2017 to allow them to continue to monitor performance of maintained schools, broker school improvement provision, and intervene as appropriate.
On 29 October 2021, we launched a consultation on future of the grant beyond March 2022. This proposed that in future these functions be funded from maintained school budgets and that we reduce the grant by 50% in 2022 to 2023 ahead of full removal in 2023 to 2024.
The consultation closed on 26 November 2021 and we published our government response Reforming how local authority school improvement functions are funded on 11 January, announcing we would implement the proposals consulted on.
