Details

Some people employed abroad have to pay UK National Insurance contributions. Others may choose to pay them to help qualify for benefits when they get back to this country or for State Pension or bereavement benefits whether they come back or stay abroad.

This guidance describes:

  • the classes of National Insurance contributions
  • how paying them affects your entitlement to social security benefits
  • arrangements for getting health care cover

Form ‘CF83 Application to pay National Insurance contributions abroad’ is also included so you can apply to pay whilst abroad.

The deadline for paying voluntary National Insurance contributions has been extended to 31 July 2023.

Read more information about the extended deadline for voluntary National Insurance contributions.

Email HMRC to ask for the form in Welsh.
