Deputy Director

Fraud & Error Strategy

Local Authority Association Representatives

Dear colleague,

I am writing to let you know that I will be leaving DWP in October.

Following a major restructuring of DWP’s corporate centre, the Department’s senior civil servants were given the opportunity to reapply for selection and also given the option of expressing interest in a voluntary exit scheme. Having considered both options, I decided (having completed just over 38 years service) that the right option for me was the voluntary exit scheme. I am pleased that this has since been agreed.

I would like to stress, however, that had it not been for the opportunity presented by the exit scheme, I would have wanted to remain in post to drive forward implementation of all aspects of the new fraud and error strategy as I strongly believe this will substantially reduce levels of fraud and error and significantly strengthen our protection against fraud and error in the future.

However, following finalisation of appointments to senior posts in the new structure which have been announced internally today, I am delighted that Lyn McDonald has been selected to replace me as Programme Manager for Fraud and Error Strategy and that John Oliver will continue as Director. Lyn is currently leading the Tell Us Once Programme and has previously held posts in PDCS and HMRC.

I know that Lyn is keen to meet her new team and wider stakeholders as soon as possible. I hope, her current commitments allowing, that she may be able to join us at meetings due to take place before formally taking over her new role on 3 October.

I can also confirm that Dave White has been re-appointed as Head of DWP’s existing Fraud Investigation Service. Appointing the Head of SFIS will be subject to a separate process at a later date.

I very much hope to see you all before I leave.

Yours sincerely

David Barr
