The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee continues its inquiry into the future of the High Street on Monday 17 December when they take evidence from online retailers and cinema chains. Witnesses will include representatives of Amazon UK, John Lewis, Debenhams, Cineworld and Vue.
In this evidence session, the committee will look at the current and future trends in online retail and the extent to which it can complement and support the high street. The Committee will take evidence from retailers that operate entirely online and businesses that combine online with a stores on the high street, to understand how their operations and costs differ. It will also look at the impact of current business rates and taxation regimes on their businesses.
The session will also investigate the future for leisure on the high street. It will also consider how easy it is to repurpose empty properties for different uses, as well as private sector investment in supporting high street regeneration.
