London Borough of Lewisham (18 002 873)
Summary: The complainant says the Council failed to send accurate notices of her council tax reduction entitlement and reneged on payment plans. The Council says it had to make changes each time it received notice of changes to the complainant’s entitlement to benefits. The Ombudsman finds the Council acted with fault in its management of the account and recommends a remedy. London Borough of Redbridge (18 010 626)
Summary: Ms X complained the Council was unlawfully pursuing her for a council tax debt which was over six years old. Ms X says this has caused her stress and anxiety. The Council was at fault. It has now agreed to cancel the amount it claimed Ms X owed. This is satisfactory to remedy the injustice it caused her. Selby District Council (18 016 191)

Summary: Ms X complains that the Council misadvised her of the option to pay on specific days of the month with her council tax direct debit. The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint because there is no significant injustice to her by the alleged fault. Cheshire East Council (18 015 563)
Summary: The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint about the Council’s decision that the complainant is liable for council tax on a property. The Ombudsman cannot alter the Council’s policy and the complainant can appeal to a tribunal against the Council’s decision on his council tax his liability. Northampton Borough Council (18 015 899)
Summary: Ms X complains that the Council misled her about a council tax debt then instructed bailiffs to collect the debt. The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint because the matter has been remedied to the Local Government Ombudsman’s satisfaction. Wolverhampton City Council (18 007 711)
Summary: Ms X complains the Council delayed finalising her housing benefit claim and refused to back-date payments. She also complains about the amount of discretionary housing payments awarded because the total amount paid towards her housing costs does not cover her rent. The Council is not at fault. Manchester City Council (18 011 613)
Summary: Miss C complains about the Council's investigation in to her council tax support claim and that it wrongly pursued a prosecution against her and about its conduct in the subsequent legal proceedings. The Ombudsman has ended his involvement because a complaint about the Council’s 2016 fraud investigation is out of time, Miss C had a right of appeal about her council tax support claim and the Ombudsman cannot investigate the conduct of the legal proceedings. London Borough of Southwark (18 016 059)
Summary: Ms X complains that the Council has charged her twice for council tax she paid as a boat owner. The Ombudsman will not investigate this complaint because she appealed to a Valuation Tribunal. Boston Borough Council (18 016 085)
Summary: The Ombudsman cannot investigate Mrs X’s complaint about the Council’s actions following a County Court judgement. This is because the law prevents the Ombudsman from investigating such matters. Salford City Council (18 017 917)
Summary: We will not investigate Mr X’s complaint about the Council’s handling of business rates. Another body is better placed to decide whether he is liable.
