The Health and Social Care Committee has named six core members of its Expert Panel that will carry out independent evaluation on Government progress in meeting ministerial pledges on a range of health and social care targets.
The Expert Panel, set up by the Committee to pilot the evaluation of specific policy areas, is chaired by Professor Dame Jane Dacre who was appointed last August.
On patient experience, Sir Robert Francis QC who chaired the investigation into significant failures of care at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust resulting in the landmark Francis Report; Dr Charlotte Augst, Chief Executive of the charity National Voices; and Dr Meerat Kaur, Senior Public Involvement Manager, National Institute of Health Research Centre for Engagement.
They are joined by experts in healthcare policy: John Appleby, Chief Economist at the Nuffield Trust; Anita Charlesworth, Director of Research at the Health Foundation; and by Professor Stephen Peckham, Director of the Centre for Health Services Studies at the University of Kent, and Professor of Health Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

“I welcome the core members to our Expert Panel led by Professor Dame Jane Dacre in this new independent process that will scrutinise government performance in meeting health and social care targets.
“The expertise of individual panel members in terms of patient experience and health policy will be invaluable in assessing the pace of progress.
“The work of the Panel means the government will be held to account by an evaluation process similar to that used across the NHS and social care system, focusing attention on areas where a number of vital commitments have been made, starting with maternity services.”
