Early Estimates for Working Age Inactive Benefit Client Groups - Updated

Summary
This gives information on the latest experimental official statistics on early estimates for the working age income support lone parent client group and employment and support allowance and incapacity benefit client group. There are also housing benefit /council tax benefit national statistics.
Detail
The latest experimental official statistics on early estimates for the working age Income Support lone parent client group (ISLP) and Employment and Support Allowance and incapacity benefit client group (ESA/IB) were released on 16th June 2010.
The early estimates are released monthly and are designed to give indicative, timely information; they are not a substitute for the National Statistics. They will be replaced by the quarterly National Statistics covering the same period when they are published. The National Statistics are the finalised figures.
We have introduced some small changes to the methodology for deriving our early estimates. These changes have improved accuracy, meaning that we can present numbers for November 2009 onwards rounded to 5 thousand (compared to 10 thousand previously). The key points for Early Estimates for inactive benefits from the latest release are:
- The working age Lone Parent client group early estimate caseload figure at 30th April 2010 is 675,000. This estimate is rounded to the nearest 5,000.
- The latest National Statistic caseload figure for this client group stands at 695,720 in November 2009.
- Our early estimate of the working age ESA/incapacity benefits client group at 30th April 2010 is 2,615,000. This estimate is rounded to the nearest 5,000.
- The latest National Statistic for this client group stands at 2,618,380 claimants in November 2009.
