SBBS letter from SG and new official statistics

SBBS letter from SG, new rates calculator and new official statistics -update

As practitioners are aware, the SG committed to writing out to all businesses that might be eligible for SBBS but not claiming. A similar letter was issued in late 2010.  This letter serves to alert practitioners that the letter will issue in the next few days.

NEW Official Statistics for SBBS

We’ve chosen to issue the letter on the back of new official statistics which were published this morning (30 Oct) showing increased take-up of SBBS of over 3,000 properties across Scotland, although 3 individual Council areas have seen numbers fall.

The full statistics can be found at - http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/Browse/Local-Government-Finance/NDR-Rates-Relief

Letter to potential recipients of SBBS

With thanks to all Councils who responded we will issue the attached letter to around 11,000 addresses starting on 1 Nov (Note - to keep costs down we will be using 2nd class mail  and letters will be posted out over several days so it may take up to 2 weeks for all letters to be received)

Where Councils were able to supply the information we will post these to the billing address (although for a minority the property address will be used if the billing was not supplied).

Where it was provided the billing reference (or UARN in some cases) has been included directly underneath the address along with the billing Council name. This should help callers and Councils identify the property concerned.

We’ve attempted to remove chains from the list of property addresses, but there may still be some lesser known chains included or others who are not eligible. However the letter is worded to advise only that the property might potentially be eligible for SBBS and does not confirm eligibility.

The final version of the letter may be subject to minor changes.

New rates calculator

Finally, we’ve worked with Scottish Enterprise to develop an improved business rates liability calculator, which will become active in the next few days. This can be found at http://business.scotland.gov.uk/calculator

Councils are free to link their own websites to this calculator if they wish (the old SG calculator will be disabled within the next month or so)

Thanks,
