Personal tax credits statistics

The Children in Low-Income Families Local Measure shows the proportion of children living in families in receipt of out-of-work (means-tested) benefits or in receipt of tax credits where their reported income is less than 60 per cent of UK median income. HMRC has republished these statistics due to an error having been found within the original versions. The error was caused by a coding problem which has now been corrected. There was no issue with the underlying data and no previous versions of the statistics were affected.

Detail

This measure provides a broad proxy for relative low-income child poverty as set out in the Child Poverty Act 2010, and enables analysis at a local level. Statistics are published at various levels of geography providing an annual snapshot as at 31 August from 2006 onwards. The definitive national measure of relative child poverty as set out in the Child Poverty Act 2010, is contained in the DWP Households Below Average Income (HBAI) publication series.

There are two changes to the benefits and tax credit system which will affect the future reporting of the Children in Low-Income Families local measure, these are outlined in the commentary. The Child Poverty Unit is seeking user views on the future of the Children in Low-Income Families local measure as an official statistics publication. Users’ views and experiences of the measure would be welcome by 31st December 2014. Please contact the Child Poverty Unit by emailing: Contacts.CPU@childpovertyunit.gsi.gov.uk.

For more details on the republication of these statistics, please see the Announcements page
