Whitehall's largest government department is in good shape and delivering a better service to its customers, according to an independent review published today.
The Capability Review for the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) shows that, as well as improving customer service; the DWP has also increased productivity by 11% since 2004 and hit its efficiency targets of saving over £1bn in costs while reducing 30,000 posts.
The Review says that the Department has responded well to the findings of the previous Capability Review in 2006. The review also notes that the Department has continued to deliver its core business successfully whilst implementing a major change programme and playing a leading role in the cross-government shared services agenda. The Department's leadership is commended for taking responsibility in leading change across the organisation. The overall Department ratings show improvements in every key area being measured since 2006.
Welcoming the report DWP Permanent Secretary, Leigh Lewis, said:
"This is a big vote of confidence in the Department. Our customers are continuing to benefit from our improving standards of service and our staff can feel rightly proud of what they have achieved. Whether it's the rollout of our new Jobcentre Plus offices or the collection of over £1billion in maintenance by the CSA for the first time, our customers are continuing to come first.
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, James Purnell, said:
"This report shows that we have a really well run Department delivering its services increasingly effectively to the millions of people it serves every day. The report is a great tribute to the leadership and staff of the DWP - and I want to congratulate everyone's hard work and commitment to ensure that we are delivering results."
