Chair comments on welcome change to Universal Credit

29 March 2018

Chair of the Work and Pensions Committee comments on Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) announcement that Universal Credit will be amended, so that all 18 to 21 year-olds will be entitled to claim support for housing costs.

Government willing to listen to evidence

Rt Hon Frank Field MP, Chair of the Work and Pensions Committee, said:

"Today's announcement on housing support for young people claiming Universal Credit shows the Government is willing to listen to evidence, and change a policy that risked pushing vulnerable young people into homelessness and destitution.

This welcome move should also mean young people can move to where there is work, and where they can use their skills.

I hope this heralds the start of a wider process of reconsidering the incentives to work provided by Universal Credit - including the vital questions of work allowances and the taper rate."
