This Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) report looks at how the Claimant Commitment works for people who are required to look for work as a condition of receiving Universal Credit.

SSAC’s assessment is based on a set of potential principles for an effective Claimant Commitment, defined using existing evidence and stakeholder input. To consider how well each of the principles are being met in practice, SSAC looked at a range of evidence, including:

  • a public consultation
  • semi-structured interviews with third-sector organisations
  • jobcentre visits

The report makes a number of recommendations to the Department for Work and Pensions.

The government’s interim response to this report was published on 9 September 2019.
