Gordon Brown talks to guests at a Downing Street reception; Crown copyrightThe Prime Minister has urged the housing sector to work with Government on delivering its goals to provide more housing.

Representatives from across the sector, including developers, mortgage lenders and housing associations, attended a Downing Street reception just hours after Gordon Brown had set out Government’s ambitions on housing as part of its Building Britain’s Future programme.

In a statement to the Commons earlier in the day, Mr Brown had announced plans to build more affordable housing by targeting investment worth £1.5 billion over two years to deliver 20,000 new affordable homes and create 45,000 jobs in construction and related sectors.

Speaking at the reception, the PM said:

“Despite the difficulties we have in this world recession, we want to make sure that we in Britain can build housing and ensure there is investment where there’s not investment at the moment.”

He added:

“We are determined to work with you to make for a better housing system for the future. We value the fact that we can work together and we want to see a better relationship in the future.”
